Job Description & Requirements

Youth for Change is a private non-profit social welfare agency based in Chico, California and serves surrounding counties and communities. The Outdoor Program exists within Youth for Change to provide healthy, healing, and therapeutic outdoor trips for youth who are accessing services from various programs within the agency. The goal of the program is to provide activity based groups for youth to engage in as alternatives or supplements to other forms of treatment they are receiving at the agency. 

In this position you will be asked to work closely with treatment teams to provide outdoor experiences for youth which can help them meet agreed upon treatment goals. These skills building goals typically include increasing social skills and self-esteem, frustration tolerance, identifying new coping skills, and improved communication skills. The program aims to achieve these goals by presenting outdoor based activities on a consistent basis through individual sessions, weekly groups, and overnight trips. Below is an abbreviated list of some daily activities, as well as examples of overnight trips.

Rock climbing
Disc golf
Exploring local swim spots
Volunteering
Organized sports activities
Geocaching
Stand up paddle boarding
Scavenger hunts and outdoor games
Guided fly fishing trips

Overnight:
Basic camping
Whitewater rafting
Backpacking
Self support canoe trips
Snow hiking and yurt trips

Whitewater is a main portion of our summer programming, the applicant must come with 3-5 years of whitewater guide experience and preferably extensive experience as a private boater as well. Summer hours can be long and continuous (5-12 days straight) and an ability to work long hours efficiently and effectively will be required. This position will be responsible for the planning and implementation of trips in coordination with the Wraparound team. This position will also be responsible for projecting trip expenses, proposing yearly trips, coordinating with community partners, accounting for all trip logistics, gear management, repair and inventory, and will come with a strong understanding of risk management practices and principles within the outdoor industry. This position also requires an individual to structure training opportunities for new staff who need to learn and understand the technical aspects of our activities, including executing a whitewater raft guide training course. WFR and swift water rescue certifications preferred. 

This is a position where healing occurs through structured play, healthy risk taking, and positive and supportive engagement with adults. As such this position requires a high level of motivation, energetic personality, and willingness to play and have fun with youth who can be extremely challenging at times. Preferably the applicant will come with an understanding of working with youth who have been diagnosed with a mental illness and best practices and interventions when youth display symptoms or are actively in crisis.
